Anya Tsaruk is a Ukrainian photographer based in Berlin. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, her work now focuses on the themes of identity, trauma, migration and community. Through her photography, she aims to raise awareness about the war in her homeland and honour the resilience and strength of people impacts by it.

I Hope Your Family Is Safe explores Tsaruk's loved ones in Ukraine, inspired by the well-meaning but unsettling phrase often said to her by foreigners. The project delves into the complex question of why her family remains in Ukraine and what safety means in a war-torn country. In challenging the oversimplified portrayal of Ukraine and its people as mere victims, Tsaruk seeks to evoke empathy grounded in shared human experience, aiming to foster a deeper connection between Ukraine and the world.
