Cécile Smetana is a French-Danish documentary photographer based in Paris. Her work is deeply influenced by her family’s North African heritage, and is rooted in the exploration of identity and memory.

MOON (Human in Creole) documents the last Creole communities in rural Louisiana, where Creole is not merely a language, but a culture born from colonialism, shaped by the convergence of African, European, and Indigenous influences. The Creole identity exists in a complex space beyond the conventional Black-White racial divide, embodying a rich ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage that is both diverse and unbound by race. In Louisiana, this identity is now at risk of vanishing after over a century of profound Americanisation.
